Mom Second Only to Winter Holidays, According to NRF Survey
From National Retail Federation
Washington, April 20, 2010 – Having spent slightly more on Valentine’s Day, Easter and even St. Patrick’s Day this year, consumers are continuing the trend and will spend a little bit more on mommy dearest as well. Behind the winter holidays (Christmas, Hanukah and Kwanza), Mother’s Day is the second largest U.S. consumer spending holiday. NRF’s 2010 Mother’s Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, found the average person will shell out $126.90 on Mother’s Day gifts, compared to $123.89 last year. Total spending is expected to reach $14.6 billion.*

As one of the biggest holidays of the year, billions will be spent at restaurants or on clothing, jewelry and flowers. Nearly two-thirds (65.2%) of celebrants will buy flowers, totaling $1.9 billion. An additional 51.8 percent will treat mom to a brunch or dinner, spending $2.9 billion on mom’s favorite food. Jewelers will (more…)

Washington, March 16, 2010 – Traditionally seen as the kickoff to spring, Easter couldn’t come at a better time this year for Americans eager to say goodbye to winter. According to NRF’s 2010 Easter Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, holiday celebrants will spend slightly more this year with the average person expected to shell out $118.60, up from $116.59 last year. Total spending is expected to reach $13.03 billion.*

While spending on most items will remain the same as last year, children can expect more jelly beans, flavored marshmallows and even gifts in their Easter baskets this year. The average person will spend $17.29 on candy, compared to $16.55 last year, and $18.16 on gifts, up from $17.30 last Easter. Other holiday purchases include clothing ($19.03), food ($37.45), flowers ($7.84), decorations ($6.34) and greeting cards ($6.30).

“With signs of spring popping up everywhere, shoppers are eager to get their hands on bright, colorful Easter merchandise,” said Tracy Mullin, President and CEO, NRF. “Warmer weather and special holiday promotions are the perfect mix to get people out of their homes and into stores as spring approaches.”

When it comes to buying Easter merchandise, most Americans will shop at discount (64.8%) and department stores (33.2%). People will also head to specialty stores such as florists or gift/greeting card stores (22.0%), online (13.1%), specialty clothing stores (7.0%) and catalogs (3.7%).

While 25-34 year-olds will be spending the most this Easter at $136.79, more 18-24 year olds will buy gifts. Nearly three-quarters (71.3%) of young adults ages 18-24 will buy gifts this year, compared to 65.8 percent of 25-34 year olds and 65.5 percent of 35-44 year olds. Young adults will spend an average of (more…)

Washington, March 8, 2010 – Retailers and restaurants might have a little more luck o’ the Irish this St. Patrick’s Day as consumers gear up for private parties and special outings to celebrate the Irish holiday. According to NRF’s 2010 St. Patrick’s Day, conducted by BIGresearch, celebrants will spend an average of $33.05 on decorations, party favors and green attire, up slightly from $32.80 last year. Total spending is expected to reach $3.44 billion.*

“With many people still worried about the economy, St. Patrick’s Day is a great opportunity for consumers to have a little fun,” said Tracy Mullin, President and CEO, NRF. “Retailers as well as restaurants should see an increase in traffic this year as people begin to shake off their winter blues and celebrate this traditionally festive holiday with friends and family.”

Of those planning on celebrating, eight out of 10 (80.8%) will simply put on their brightest green tie or sweater, but others want to have a bit more fun – nearly three out of 10 (29.6%) will attend a party at a bar or restaurant. Another third will (more…)

There are about 25,000 households with married couples in Douglas County, Oregon. About 80,000 people are over the age of 18 and slightly more are female  than male.  The financial opportunity for Valentines Day is pretty big … you can do the math with the figures below. -Men to Spend Twice as Much on Gifts as Women-

Washington, February 1, 2010 – As husbands and wives across America continue to focus on reining in their spending, it seems couples this year plan to spend less on each other but more on their family, friends, co-workers…even their pets. According to NRF’s 2010 Valentine’s Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, couples will spend an average of $63.34 on gifts for their significant other or spouse, compared to $67.22 last year. The average person will shell out $103.00 on traditional Valentine’s Day merchandise this year, similar to last year’s $102.50. Total holiday spending is expected to reach $14.1 billion.*

With Americans cutting back on the amount they spend on their significant other, friends and co-workers can expect a little bit more this year. The average person will spend $5.37 on friends, up from $4.74 last year; $4.29 on classmates and teachers, compared to $3.59 last year; and $2.84 on co-workers, slightly up from the $1.94 they spent in 2009. Family pets will also feel the love this year with the average person spending $3.27 on their furry friends, up from $2.17 last year. Spending on family members will remain the same ($20.94 vs. $20.95 last year).

“While some may view Valentine’s Day as cliché, many people still look forward to giving significant others, friends, family and even pets something special,” said Tracy Mullin, President and CEO, NRF. “Rather than not give anything at all, consumers will instead focus on small, thoughtful gifts for the people who mean the most to them this year.”

As in previous years, men will spend nearly twice the amount women spend on the holiday. The average man plans to shell out $135.35 to impress the people in his life while women only expect to spend $72.28.

Personal and practical gifts will resonate with celebrants again this year as more people will look to sweaters, winter accessories and other clothing options (14.4% vs. 10.2% in 2009) in place of jewelry (15.5% vs. 16.0% last year) or an evening out (35.6% vs. 47.0% in 2009.) Traditional gifts such as greeting cards (54.9%), candy (47.2%) and flowers (35.6%) remain popular choices.

“The economy has forced consumers to rethink their gift giving practices,” said Phil Rist, Executive Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, BIGresearch. “Personal and unique gifts will speak volumes this Valentine’s Day as consumers dig deep into their hearts and not their wallets.”

When it comes to where people will shop, most will head to discount stores (40.9%), though department stores (31.1%) and specialty stores such as florists, electronics stores and greeting cards and gift stores (21.4%) will also see a share of holiday foot traffic.**

I’d like to recommend to my retail friends a free half-hour webinar from Big Research and Northwestern University that marries contemporary research with high quality analysis and provides a strong view of shopping habits and the future of retail. The authors conclude retail is undergoing transformational change and will not return to what it was.

The authors begin with a traditional view of the consumer, retailers, middlemen, sales force and market factors and construct a new model they call the retail theater.  The webinar, a slide and audio presentation, includes several charts of consumer information and considers demographics, number of shopping trips, purpose of shopping trips, and the amount of spending per trip.

Of particularly interest to me was a review of media consumption and influence. Clearly online time has substantially increased, eclipsing television in some age groups. The study, however, found little evidence of correlation between time and shopping influence, finding that: word of mouth remains primary in shopping influence, followed by coupons and inserts.

At the end of the webinar is a terrific offer on the book retail communities. So, grab a cup of coffee and turn on your computer.

Is it worth your time? I think so. We’ll be showing it to our retail advertising account executives.
