Excellent question Mark - and still relevant.

My opinion is a business owner needs to be very careful with Groupon and fully understand the costs associated with their promotion. There have been horror stories of businesses being overwhelmed with demand and actually losing money - some even being driven out of business by their Groupon promotion.

I'm sure Groupon has it's pluses. But an owner should really count the cost before taking the plunge. Because Groupon gets their 50% of revenue generated regardless!

Have you got more to share on this since your original post?

I have just begun work in a shoe store in New South Wales, Australia. I havent worked in retail for some 20 years but I still love the interaction with others that this work presents. I love being of service to people and I love shoes so at this point in time this is the PERFECT job for me! I have never considered myself yo be a good 'sales person'. As a customer, I loathe a hard-sell. If I want something I will ask the sales assistant otherwise I am perfectly happy to be left alone to browse. I also loathe false chit chat and phoney compliments. I know this about myself as a consumer so I apply this to my work in retail. I am careful to discern what sort of service a customer wants or needs. Some customers appreciate a bit of lively conversation and hands on help while thers like to be left alone with minimal assistance.
As I am driving to work in the morning I set myself a target sales figure for the day. I picture the amount in my mind and I picture myself reconciling the days takings at the end of the day with a the target figure in bold writing. And that is as far as I go with the financial side of things. I then say a little prayer that I am may be of service in some way to all who enter my shop and to my bosses and their business.
I dont, and I never want to. view my customers in terms of $'s. I see them each as an opportunity to connect with another human being and to give them something in their day that they may not have had if they not come into my shop.
The area that I need to strengthen is my product knowledge. So I have set about researching foot compaints, fitting issues and shoe construction etc. And while this information is important and it can assist the customer, at the end of the day the most important aspect of sales is customer relations.

Hey Nrmarketwatch,
In addition to your post I was wondering, Situated in Douglas County, Nebraska, Valley has its citizens a minimal-city environment with the usefulness of tremendous-metropolis browsing and work chances close at hand. A small 10-moment drive from Omaha, Valley is a historic group with sturdy ties to the agricultural traditions of the region. Valley was set up in 1854 by predominantly Swedish farmers who moved to the community since of the wealthy, fertile soil accessible in Nebraska. Some came immediately from Sweden, even when many others constructed their way to Valley and the bordering location just after briefly settling in Iowa, Minnesota, and other eastern states. The making of the Union Pacific Railroad station and immense-scale cattle stockyards also attracted a great deal of workers to the Valley space in the 1860s.
